Red tree brain

This is the red tree brain jelly fungus I found on a snag behind the house. The scientific name is Peniophora rufa according to the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms.

It looks like there are couple of kinds of lichens, too, but I haven't figured out what they are yet.

Other nature news:

~~White-throated sparrows are calling.

~~The first mourning doves of the season returned to the jack pine today.

~~A porcupine slowly crossed the road in front of the car on Saturday night. As it headed into the woods, it raised its quills a little. From behind, it looked like it was wearing a crinoline around its tail.
