Spotted elephant

My favorite Christmas present this year is an origami spotted elephant my husband made me.

I'd been thinking of the spotted elephant on Rudolph, and I guess I wasn't the only one — little plush versions were selling on eBay for about $50.  That seemed crazy. I'm happy with this little paper one.

According to different Internet sources, the spotted elephant is the most popular character on the Island of Misfit Toys, but no one seems to really know why.

I'm not even sure why the elephant was a misfit. He didn't have an attenuated trunk or tiny ears — just some polka dots.
