Tree

Yesterday we got our Christmas tree.  We went to Country Greenhouse, same as last year, but at 19 degrees, it was almost 20 degrees warmer than it was in 2008.  Last year we bought a spruce tree that smelled a little like cat pee and dropped lots of needles, so this year we went with a balsam fir.  It's beautiful and the needles don't pierce the skin on my hands and wrists.

The greenhouse offers sleigh rides to kids on Saturdays, so we got to see horses, too.  The horses looked the same as the ones from last year, but this year I didn't feel bad for them standing in the cold, waiting to give rides.  I thought they were Percherons, and when I talked to the greenhouse owner, he told me they were Percheron crosses named Nick and Ben.

As we were waiting for the guy to give us a fresh cut on the bottom of our tree, I watched the horses.  Both had blinders on, but the one kept turning to his buddy.  They were bays, which means (I just learned) they are overall reddish in color, and have black legs, manes and tails. Even though they were only part Percheron, they had thick bodies and sturdy legs.  Up here, some people still use Percherons for logging, and last week, Percherons brought St. Nick  into town for the tree lighting.

Back at the house, we didn't have the tree in the stand for more than five minutes before the cats came to investigate. The two of them like to dunk their paws down into the tree stand and then lick the water off their toes. Maybe sap makes the water taste tangy.
